If you've started exploring premium Japanese incense, you've probably come across words such as Agarwood, Aloeswood, Jinkoh and Kyara. At first glance, it can be rather confusing. Are they different ingredients? Is Jinkoh better than agarwood? And why can a small box of Kyara incense cost considerably more than an everyday box of Japanese incense? The good news is that it's much simpler once you understand the terminology. Let's start with the most important point: Agarwood, aloeswood and Jinkoh essentially refer to the same precious aromatic wood, while Kyara refers to an exceptionally rare and highly prized grade or category of agarwood in Japanese incense culture. Here's what that actually means. What is agarwood? Agarwood is one of the world's most treasured aromatic woods and has been used in incense and fragrance traditions for centuries. But here's what makes it particularly fascinating: Agarwood doesn't begin life as the dark, beautifully fragrant wood used in premium incense. It comes from trees including those of the Aquilaria genus. Under particular natural conditions, the tree develops resin within its wood. Over time, this resin-rich wood becomes darker, denser and intensely aromatic. It is this resinous wood that becomes agarwood. The process is one reason high-quality natural agarwood is so precious. Not every piece of wood develops the same amount or quality of aromatic resin. Is aloeswood the same as agarwood? Yes. Aloeswood is another English name commonly used for agarwood. You'll see both terms when shopping for Japanese incense. One Japanese incense maker might describe a fragrance as “Premium Agarwood”, while another product may be labelled “Aloeswood”. They shouldn't be confused with the aloe vera plant – aloeswood has nothing to do with aloe vera. So when browsing Japanese incense, you can generally think: Agarwood = Aloeswood But then you'll encounter another word... What is Jinkoh? Jinkoh – also written Jinkō or Jin-koh – is the Japanese name commonly used for agarwood. The Japanese characters used for Jinkoh relate to the idea of fragrant wood that sinks. Why sinks? As agarwood develops and becomes increasingly saturated with aromatic resin, the wood becomes heavier and denser. This precious fragrant wood has played an important role in Japanese incense culture for centuries. So now we have: Agarwood = Aloeswood = Jinkoh They're different names used for essentially the same family of aromatic wood. However, the quality of agarwood can vary enormously. And that's where things become really interesting. What does agarwood smell like? This is surprisingly difficult to answer – because there isn't one single “agarwood smell”. Its fragrance can vary according to the individual wood, resin content, origin, age and quality. Depending on the agarwood and the incense blend, you might notice characteristics that are: Woody Sweet Resinous Spicy Earthy Bitter Deep and slightly smoky High-quality agarwood can be remarkably complex. Rather than experiencing one obvious fragrance from beginning to end, you may notice different characteristics appearing as the incense burns. This complexity is a major reason agarwood is so highly regarded by Japanese incense enthusiasts. So, what is Kyara? Now we reach the really special stuff. Kyara is an exceptionally rare and highly prized grade or category of agarwood in traditional Japanese incense culture. It isn't a completely different species of tree. Think of agarwood as the broader family of aromatic material, with Kyara occupying an exceptional position within it. Kyara is prized for the richness, depth and extraordinary complexity of its fragrance. Because genuine high-quality Kyara is incredibly scarce, it can be exceptionally expensive. This is why you'll sometimes find a small quantity of premium Kyara Japanese incense costing substantially more than a much larger box of everyday incense. You're paying for the rarity and quality of the aromatic material rather than simply the number of incense sticks in the box. Agarwood vs Jinkoh vs Kyara – what's the difference? Here's the easiest way to remember it: Agarwood – the commonly used English name for the resin-rich aromatic wood. Aloeswood – another English name for agarwood. Jinkoh – the Japanese term commonly used for agarwood/aloeswood in incense culture. Kyara – an exceptionally rare and highly prized form or grade of Jinkoh. So if you see a Japanese incense called “Jinkoh”, don't assume it contains a completely different ingredient from one labelled “Agarwood”. The terminology is simply reflecting the Japanese incense tradition. Why is agarwood incense so expensive? This comes back to rarity. High-quality natural agarwood takes considerable time to develop and only particular resin-rich wood possesses the fragrance characteristics sought by incense makers. Premium material has become increasingly difficult to obtain. There are also controls around its international trade. Agarwood-producing Aquilaria species are covered by CITES regulations, which monitor and control international trade to help protect wild populations. Then there's the incense-making itself. Premium Japanese incense isn't simply about grinding some fragrant wood and making it into a stick. Experienced incense makers carefully balance aromatic woods with other natural ingredients such as sandalwood, cinnamon, clove, benzoin, camphor and herbs. Tiny changes in the quality or quantity of an ingredient can alter the finished fragrance. It's part ingredient and part craftsmanship. Is agarwood the same as Oud? This is another question we're often asked. Agarwood is the aromatic material also associated with Oud or Oudh. However, the way that material is experienced can be quite different. In Middle Eastern perfumery, Oud often refers to the fragrance or oil associated with agarwood. In traditional Japanese fragrance culture, the aromatic wood itself has been appreciated through incense and the heating of fragrant wood. So while they share the same fascinating aromatic origin, an Oud perfume and a Japanese Jinkoh incense can offer very different fragrance experiences. What is agarwood incense made from? This is an important distinction. An agarwood incense stick generally shouldn't be imagined as simply a thin piece of solid agarwood. Japanese stick incense is normally a carefully formulated blend. Aromatic woods may be finely powdered and combined with other fragrance ingredients and natural binding materials before being formed into incense sticks. The amount and quality of agarwood used will vary enormously between different products. That's one reason two boxes both labelled “Agarwood Incense” can smell completely different – and have very different prices. Why does premium agarwood incense sometimes smell subtle? If you're used to strongly fragranced Indian incense, your first experience of premium Japanese agarwood incense may be surprising. You might expect an expensive incense to produce an enormous amount of fragrance. That's not necessarily what you're paying for. With premium Japanese incense, complexity can be more important than strength. Instead of one powerful fragrance dominating the room, you may notice subtle changes and layers. Try burning it away from where you're sitting rather than directly beside you. Allow the fragrance to drift towards you. You may begin noticing characteristics that weren't obvious when you first lit the stick. This relates beautifully to the traditional Japanese idea of “listening to incense” rather than simply smelling it. Where does sandalwood fit in? Sandalwood – known as Byakudan in Japanese incense – is another hugely important aromatic wood. You'll find it in everything from affordable Japanese incense to sophisticated premium blends. Sandalwood tends to offer a smooth, warm, sweet and creamy woody fragrance. Agarwood can be considerably more complex and variable. Many premium Japanese incense recipes actually combine sandalwood and agarwood alongside traditional spices and botanicals. So it isn't always a case of choosing one or the other. The skill is in the blend. Which agarwood incense should a beginner try? You certainly don't need to start with Kyara. In fact, we wouldn't recommend jumping immediately to some of the most expensive Japanese incense if you're completely new to it. Start by exploring an accessible Japanese agarwood or aloeswood incense. Pay attention to the fragrance while it burns and, importantly, after it has finished burning. Then try another. As your nose becomes accustomed to the subtler fragrance style, you can gradually explore higher grades and more complex blends. You may find yourself beginning to recognise the difference between sandalwood and agarwood-based incense without even looking at the box. That's when exploring Japanese incense becomes particularly enjoyable. Is Kyara incense worth the price? This really depends on why you burn incense. If you're simply looking for a pleasant fragrance for your home, you don't need Kyara. There are plenty of beautiful and affordable Japanese incense sticks to enjoy every day. But if you become fascinated by traditional Japanese fragrance and want to experience increasingly rare aromatic materials, Kyara represents something quite different. It is less about making your room smell nice and more about appreciating fragrance itself. Think of it like fine wine, specialist tea or perfume. You don't need the rarest one to enjoy it. But once you become interested in the ingredients, their origins and their different characteristics, exploring higher grades becomes part of the experience. A whole new world of Japanese incense Agarwood is one of the ingredients that makes exploring Japanese incense so fascinating. What begins with buying a simple box of incense can lead you into a centuries-old world of aromatic woods, traditional blending, sandalwood, Jinkoh and eventually the mysterious and precious Kyara. So next time you see Agarwood, Aloeswood, Jinkoh or Kyara written on a Japanese incense box, you'll know exactly what you're looking at. And perhaps more importantly, you'll know why that little box of incense might be rather special. If you've ever browsed Japanese incense, you may have wondered why one box can cost a few pounds while another can cost considerably more. They may both contain relatively simple-looking, slender incense sticks – so what exactly are you paying for? The answer is largely found in the ingredients, their rarity, the quality of the aromatic woods and the skill involved in blending them. And when it comes to the most precious ingredients used in traditional Japanese incense, one name stands above most others: Kyara. Why can Japanese incense be expensive? Not all Japanese incense is expensive. There are plenty of affordable ranges designed for everyday burning. However, as you move into premium Japanese incense, you'll often encounter increasingly valuable natural aromatic materials such as sandalwood and agarwood, also known as aloeswood or jinkoh. Unlike simply adding a fragrance to an incense base, traditional premium Japanese incense can use aromatic woods themselves as an important part of the fragrance. The quality, origin and rarity of those woods can have a significant effect on the final price. There is also the craftsmanship involved. Traditional Japanese incense houses have developed their blending techniques over generations. Creating a balanced fragrance from aromatic woods, herbs and spices requires experience and careful selection of ingredients. What is the most expensive ingredient in Japanese incense? One of the most precious ingredients found in high-end Japanese incense is Kyara, the highest and most prized grade or form of agarwood. To understand why Kyara is so valuable, we first need to understand agarwood. What is agarwood? Agarwood – also called aloeswood or jinkoh in the world of Japanese incense – is an extraordinary aromatic wood. The wood does not simply begin life with the deep fragrance associated with fine agarwood. Under particular natural circumstances and over time, certain trees develop a dark, fragrant resin within the wood. It is this resin-rich material that produces the complex aroma prized by incense makers. Good-quality agarwood can produce an extraordinarily layered fragrance, with characteristics that may be perceived as sweet, woody, spicy, bitter or resinous. It has been treasured in Japanese fragrance culture for centuries. Why is agarwood so expensive? The problem is that high-quality agarwood isn't something that can simply be taken from every tree. Only certain wood develops the desirable concentration and quality of aromatic resin, and the finest material is increasingly difficult to obtain. It is also sourced from relatively limited areas of Southeast Asia. This combination of rarity, time, quality and demand means that genuine high-grade agarwood can be exceptionally valuable. The better the quality of the aromatic wood used in an incense, the more expensive the finished incense is likely to become. And then there is Kyara... Within the world of agarwood sits something even more special: Kyara. Kyara is regarded in Japanese incense culture as the finest and most highly prized form of agarwood. It is exceptionally rare and prized for the complexity and elegance of its aroma. This helps explain why you may occasionally encounter Japanese incense with a price that initially seems extraordinary. You're not simply paying for a box of sticks. You're potentially buying an incense containing tiny quantities of an extremely scarce aromatic material that has been valued for centuries. For serious Japanese incense enthusiasts, experiencing Kyara can be rather like a whisky enthusiast tasting a particularly rare whisky or a perfume enthusiast experiencing an exceptional natural ingredient. It's about appreciating the material itself. Is Kyara really more valuable than gold? You may have heard people say that Kyara can be worth more than gold. This isn't simply a phrase invented by incense sellers. Nippon Kodo itself describes premium aloeswood used in its Kyara incense as extremely difficult to obtain today and says it is considered more valuable than gold. However, quality varies enormously, so it isn't useful to assume that every piece of agarwood – or every incense carrying an agarwood description – has the same value. That's why the provenance, grade and amount of aromatic wood used can make such a difference. What about sandalwood? Sandalwood is another extremely important ingredient in Japanese incense. Known as Byakudan in Japan, sandalwood has a wonderfully smooth, sweet and woody fragrance. The aromatic heartwood is particularly valued, and good-quality sandalwood has been prized for centuries. You'll therefore often notice a progression when exploring Japanese incense. An accessible everyday incense may use a relatively simple fragrance composition. Move further into traditional incense and you'll begin encountering better-quality sandalwood. Go further still and you'll find incense featuring agarwood. At the very highest end, you may encounter Kyara. That isn't a strict rule – incense formulations vary enormously – but it helps explain the dramatic differences in price you can see between Japanese incense ranges. Why are some tiny boxes more expensive than large boxes? This catches many customers out. With incense, more sticks doesn't necessarily mean better value or better quality. A large box of everyday incense could cost considerably less than a small wooden box containing only a handful of premium sticks. That's because the cost isn't simply determined by how much incense is in the box. It's what's in the incense that matters. A smaller quantity containing premium agarwood or Kyara can be far more expensive to produce than a much larger quantity of everyday incense. Does expensive Japanese incense smell stronger? Not necessarily – and this is really important. Higher price does not automatically mean a stronger fragrance. In fact, somebody accustomed to powerful Indian incense may initially find some premium Japanese incense surprisingly subtle. The appeal is often in its complexity. Rather than one strong fragrance immediately dominating the room, you may begin to notice different characteristics as the incense burns and as the fragrance gently moves through the space. Japanese incense appreciation is sometimes described as “listening to fragrance” rather than simply smelling it. That idea makes much more sense when you begin exploring higher-quality aromatic woods. Is expensive Japanese incense worth it? That depends entirely on what you want from your incense. If you simply want a pleasant fragrance to burn around your home every day, you certainly don't need to spend a fortune. There are some wonderful affordable Japanese incense ranges. But if you become interested in incense as a fragrance experience, exploring premium sandalwood and agarwood can open up an entirely different side of Japanese incense. You also don't have to jump straight from everyday incense to Kyara. Part of the enjoyment is working your way through different grades, woods and incense houses and gradually learning what you can smell. From everyday incense to something extraordinary This is perhaps what makes Japanese incense so fascinating. At one end, you can buy an affordable box to burn while relaxing at home. At the other, you enter a centuries-old fragrance tradition involving rare aromatic woods, skilled incense makers and ingredients such as agarwood and Kyara that have been treasured for generations. So, the next time you see a small box of Japanese incense carrying a surprisingly large price tag, take a closer look at the ingredients. You may find that those unassuming little sticks contain one of the world's most precious aromatic woods. And that is when Japanese incense becomes much more than simply making a room smell nice. It becomes an exploration of fragrance.
